What to Pack for a Snow Trip: The Complete Checklist

First things first: you don’t need to own a ton

Snow trips look intimidating because the gear sounds specialized. In reality, if you’ve got the right layers + a couple of key accessories, you’re set. Renting your outerwear takes care of the bulky, expensive stuff, and you fill in the rest with what you probably already have. Win-win.

This checklist is built for first-timers, families, and anyone who wants a “no stress, no frostbite” plan.

The Snow Trip Packing Checklist

Outerwear (rent these, unless you already own them)

Zent note: Our packages include the big two (jacket + pants) so you don’t have to think about it. Just pick your size, and we’ll send cozy.

Layers (bring these)

Baselayers (next to skin):

  • 1–2 moisture-wicking tops (merino wool or synthetic)

  • 1–2 base layer bottoms / leggings

Mid layer (warmth):

  • 1–2 fleece or light puffy tops

  • A cozy sweater works in a pinch—just avoid cotton next to skin.

Why no cotton? Cotton holds moisture. Moisture turns into cold. Cold turns into “why did we do this trip?” real fast.

Feet & hands (the difference between fun and misery)

  • Waterproof gloves or mittens (mittens are warmer)

  • Warm ski socks (1 pair/day)

    • Look for wool or synthetic

    • Avoid chunky hiking socks—they can pinch inside boots

  • Winter boots with traction for walking around town

Pro tip: Pack an extra pair of gloves. One snowball fight later and you’ll understand.

Head/face protection

  • Helmet if you’re skiing/riding (rent or borrow if needed)

  • Beanie or warm hat

  • Neck gaiter / buff (game-changer on windy days)

  • Sunglasses + goggles if you’re on the hill

Even if you’re not skiing, sun off snow is bright. Like “I didn’t know my eyeballs could squint this much” bright.

For the kiddos

  • 2 pairs of gloves (minimum)

  • Extra base layers

  • Hand warmers (cheap, magical)

  • Snack stash (hangry kids + cold = fast meltdown)

Car & lodge essentials

  • Sunscreen + lip balm (SPF isn’t just a beach thing)

  • Water bottle (altitude sneaks up on you)

  • Small backpack for day stuff

  • Phone charger / power bank

  • Towel + grocery bag for wet gear in the car

  • Chains if required for your route

  • A change of clothes for the ride home (you’ll thank yourself)

“What if I’m just going to play in snow, not ski?”

Same rules, just fewer items:

  • Rent or bring waterproof jacket + pants

  • Bring base + mid layers

  • Warm socks, gloves, hat, and boots
That’s it. You’ll be warm, dry, and ready for whatever snow chaos you’re planning.

Quick “Pack Like a Pro” recap

If you remember nothing else:

  1. Waterproof outside, wicking inside.
